ChangAi supports the construction of toilets in project villages

Yunnan Ministry of Health recently launched a policy to improve hygiene and sanitation in the countryside. As the improvement of toilet conditions has been on the agenda of ChangAi and is a key part of this policy, we decided to support the construction of toilets in 50 households in three project villages in Ruili and Wanding. A standard toilet designed by Yunnan MOH costs 3,000 RMB - each household contributes 1,850 RMB, the local government provides 550 RMB, and ChangAi provides 600 RMB. Contribution by households themselves is essential to ensure the understanding of benefits from improved hygiene standards. Construction has been under way ahead of the rainy season.

We expect improved domestic hygiene to have a positive impact on children's health, leading to better concentration at school and thus benefiting both their education and living environment. Healthier parents are also in a better position to care for their children.

ChangAi participated in Christmas gift fairs in Beijing

In November 2009, ChangAi participated in its first Christmas fair, the Gift Bazaar, a dynamic community event founded by the Stage One organization and held at the Canadian International School (CIS) featuring arts, crafts and local produce from NGOs and artisans, as well as performances by CIS school children.

In 2010 ChangAi continued this tradition by joining various Christmas fairs in Beijing. While the table fees went to support charities selected by the organizers, we raised over RMB 3,000 for ChangAi selling souvenirs and greeting cards, as well as promoted our project among local and international communities. Proceeds from the events will go towards sponsoring the annual Children's Day activities and folk dance classes in two villages which ChangAi supports in 2011.

  • Winter Wonderland fair on Dec 12, 2010, organised by Dulwich College to raise funds for an underprivileged community in Papua New Guinea.
  • Embassy House Christmas bazaar on Dec 7, 2010. Table fees from non-NGO vendors went to the Roundabout, a not-for-profit distribution store distributing donated goods to people in need in Beijing and throughout China.
  • The Gift Charity bazaar on Nov 14, 2010. Over 1,100 participants, double from 2009, raised twice as much for charities supporting migrant children and vulnerable people.

ChangAi post-it note

During the ChangAi April 2009 visit to the project area, a village chief and members of the village-level Women's Federation raised one of the biggest issues facing young people and teens in the local villages: the question of what they will do when they finish school. Some older children may decide to move to nearby cities to find work.

Q: What skills do they need to navigate the dangers associated with traveling to a new city, negotiate good working conditions and earn a living?

If you have ideas or suggestions about how ChangAi can address these issues, email admin@chang-ai.org
